The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed, has paid glowing tribute to Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader who “was not always comfortable with politics but what he did was try, try and try again.”
Speaking on the life of the late president, Mohammed reflected on the late leader’s legacy, saying: “He believed in the rule of law and he believed in the system that even if it was imperfect, he would keep trying till he got to where he needed to be.”
The UN official further praised Buhari’s selfless service to Nigeria, stating: “He gave it his all and whenever he was asked to serve, he served.”
Former President Muhammadu Buhari, who led Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82. The ex-military ruler turned democratically elected president had been receiving medical treatment in London before his death.
His body was flown back to Nigeria on July 15, where it lay in state at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, allowing dignitaries and members of the public to pay their last respects. A national funeral service was held at the National Mosque in Abuja, attended by incumbent President Bola Tinubu, former heads of state, and international representatives.
On July 15, Buhari was buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic rites. The simple ceremony was attended by family members, close associates, and government officials.
