The United States Supreme Court has delivered a major blow to President Donald Trump, ruling against his authority to impose sweeping global tariffs on foreign goods.
In a decision released on Friday, the nation’s highest court struck down the controversial tariff framework, effectively nullifying the broad taxes placed on imports under the Trump administration last year.
The ruling curtails the executive branch’s power to unilaterally enact such trade measures without clearer congressional authorization.
The case, which has been closely watched by international trading partners and domestic industries alike, challenged the legality of the tariffs, arguing they exceeded the president’s constitutional authority. By ruling in favour of the plaintiffs, the Supreme Court has not only reversed a key pillar of Trump’s trade policy but also reaffirmed the need for legislative oversight in matters of international commerce.
