Charles Soludo, the incumbent Governor of Anambra State, is set to be officially declared re-elected after winning Saturday’s governorship election across all 21 local government areas.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has formally announced all results at its collation centre in the state capital, Awka, and is conducting final checks before making the official declaration.
To win the election, a candidate must secure both the highest number of votes and at least 25 per cent of the votes in no fewer than 14 of the state’s 21 local government areas. A review of the officially announced results confirms that Mr Soludo, candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, has comfortably surpassed both constitutional requirements.
The governor, who was first elected about four years ago and is due to conclude his initial term next March, stood against 15 other candidates. His main rivals included Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress and George Moghalu of the Labour Party.
While the election was largely peaceful, the process was marred by concerns over vote-buying in some parts of the state. The civil society organisation YIAGA Africa, which monitored the poll, provided a preliminary estimated voter turnout of between 20 and 23 per cent.
