The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Nigeria has expelled its National Chairman and Youth Leader, along with several other senior officials. The party said the move was due to gross misconduct and violations of its constitution.
The decision was announced in a statement released after an emergency meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) in the capital, Abuja.
It followed an investigation into allegations which included financial impropriety and abuse of office. The party also cited activities it said had damaged its unity and public image.
According to the communiqué, the expelled members were found guilty of anti-party activities. These included holding unauthorised meetings, making public statements that undermined the party’s leadership, and attempts to destabilise its internal structures.
The NEC stated that the disciplinary action was necessary to restore order and to uphold the party’s principles of transparency, accountability, and loyalty.
“The SDP will not tolerate any behaviour that threatens its integrity or unity. The party remains committed to internal democracy and will continue to take decisive action against any member who violates its rules,” the statement read in part.
The party also announced that interim officials would be appointed to fill the affected positions pending a national convention, where new leaders will be duly elected.
