The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has complied with a Federal High Court order and filed his defence against terrorism charges brought by the Federal Government.
The courtroom witnessed a dramatic scene on Friday as Kanuโs legal team submitted the defence documents directly within the courtroom, following a special directive from presiding Judge, Justice James Omotosho.
This move marks a fresh shift in strategy for the IPOB leader, who had until now repeatedly refused to open his defence. Kanu had consistently insisted that the prosecution must first show him the specific terrorism law he was alleged to have violated.
To break the impasse and ensure compliance with its order, Justice Omotosho had earlier approved the temporary relocation of the courtโs registry to his courtroom to facilitate the filing process.
Counsel to the Federal Government, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, informed the court that he would accept the court processes from Kanu within the courtroom and would respond accordingly.
Following the submission, Justice Omotosho stood down the proceedings for one hour to allow for the processing of the newly filed documents.
