Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing “deep divisions” and an irreconcilable internal crisis within the party.
The resignation, which takes effect from Sunday, 25th January 2026, was announced in a statement signed by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Friday.
Governor Yusuf did not resign alone. He is leaving alongside a significant portion of the party’s structure in the state, including 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, 8 members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 Local Government Chairmen. This mass exodus represents a severe blow to the NNPP’s hold on its key political stronghold.
In his resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of his ward in Diso-Chiranchi, Gwale Local Government Area, the Governor expressed gratitude for the platform but stated his decision was “in the best interest of the people of Kano State.”
“In recent times, the party has been confronted with persistent internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and ongoing legal processes,” Governor Yusuf wrote. He noted that these disputes have “created deep divisions within the party structure, resulting in cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable.”
The Governor emphasized that his decision was taken “in good faith, without any ill will, and with a continued commitment to the peace, unity, and progress of Kano State.”
The party’s Secretary at the ward level, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged the resignation, commending Governor Yusuf for his “laudable projects” but concurring on the “lingering crisis” within the NNPP.
“We have no option than to accept the resignation of a one and most performing Governor of the NNPP,” Zubairu stated.
