The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced on Wednesday that it has finalised the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections, even as it awaits the passage of the amended Electoral Act by the National Assembly (NASS).
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made the disclosure during a meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Abuja.
While assuring the public of the commission’s preparedness, Prof. Amupitan highlighted a significant potential hurdle.
He noted that INEC has already submitted its proposals to the lawmakers but conceded that the eventual content and passage timeline of the new Electoral Act could impact certain aspects of the newly finalised schedule.
“For now, the commission has no choice than to rely on the subsisting Act for its activities,” the Chairman stated, underscoring the operational constraint of planning under an existing law that is pending amendment.
The announcement places the ball in the legislature’s court, creating a scenario where detailed electoral planning is moving forward on the basis of a legal framework that is expected to change.
The timing of NASS’s passage of the amended Act will now be closely watched, as any prolonged delay could force INEC to adjust its schedule.
