A court in Finland has sentenced the Biafran separatist, Simon Ekpa, to six years in prison for terrorism related offences.
Ekpa, who describes himself as the Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, was found guilty of using his social media platforms to incite acts of terror in Nigeria.
He was arrested in November 2024. The charges related to his online campaigns, which prosecutors successfully argued encouraged violence and disruption in Nigeria’s South-East region.
The Nigerian government had previously filed an official request for his extradition. It is now awaiting an official response from Finland following this conviction and sentence.
Reports indicate that Ekpa will be deemed to have already served nearly one year of his six year prison term.
