The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday ordered the remand of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), his son, and one of his wives in the Kuje Correctional Centre.
Justice Emeka Nwite issued the order pending the hearing and determination of their bail application. The decision followed arguments from both the defence team, led by Joseph Daudu (SAN), and the prosecution counsel, Ekele Iheneacho (SAN).
Malami and his co-defendantsโhis son, Abubakar Malami, and wife, Bashir Asabeโare facing a 16-count money laundering charge brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The anti-graft agency alleges the defendants conspired to conceal, retain, and disguise the proceeds of unlawful activities amounting to several billions of naira. The charges, which span several years, accuse them of using companies and bank accounts to launder funds, retaining cash as loan collateral, and acquiring high-value properties in Abuja and Kano.
The EFCC further contends that some of the alleged offences were committed while Malami served as the nation’s chief law officer, in breach of the Money Laundering Act.
Details of the bail hearing are awaited.
