The Federal High Court in Abuja has delivered a decisive judgment in the protracted Labour Party (LP) leadership crisis, affirming the removal of Julius Abure as National Chairman and ordering the electoral body to recognize a new leadership.
Justice Lifu, presiding over the case on Wednesday, ruled that Abureโs tenure had legally elapsed. The court upheld the Senator Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee as the only valid and lawful leadership of the party.
Consequently, the judge issued a direct order to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize and engage with Senator Nenadi Usman as the partyโs leader forthwith.
The judgment was disclosed by human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, who was present in court. In a post on the social media platform X, Effiong stated, โHonourable Justice Lifu has just upheld Senator Nnadi Esther Usman-led National Caretaker Committee as the only valid and lawful leadership of the Labour Party. The Judge reaffirmed that by the Supreme Courtโs judgement, Julius Abureโs tenure had since elapsed.โ
This ruling is the latest development in a series of legal battles that have plagued the opposition party, potentially paving the way for a resolution to its internal leadership disputes ahead of future elections.
