President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has bestowed Nigeria’s highest national honour, the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), upon renowned philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, in recognition of his decades of transformative work in global health, education, and poverty alleviation.
The prestigious ceremony took place on Tuesday evening in Lagos, with Gates joined by Africa’s wealthiest businessman, Aliko Dangote, at Aso Rock Villa. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga stated that the award celebrates Gates’ exceptional service to humanity, particularly through his foundation’s extensive partnerships with Nigeria and other African nations.
The honour follows Gates’ recent pledge of $200 billion over the next two decades through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to advance global health and development, with a strong focus on Africa. Speaking earlier in Addis Ababa, Gates stressed the critical need for collaboration with “governments that prioritise citizens’ welfare” to drive sustainable progress.
We deeply value Mr. Gates’ unwavering dedication and hope he remains a steadfast partner in Africa’s transformation, remarked Graça Machel, a prominent advocate for women and children’s rights, underscoring the significance of Gates’ continued investments across the continent.
During his Nigerian visit, Gates is set to headline the Goalkeepers Nigeria event, which will showcase homegrown artificial intelligence (AI) innovations and initiatives to reinforce primary healthcare systems. He championed the integration of AI into Africa’s next-generation health infrastructure, likening its potential impact to mobile banking’s revolutionary effect on the continent’s financial sector.
The Gates Foundation has long collaborated with African governments to accelerate development through innovation. Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, and UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed commended African leaders for their “resilience and vision” in enhancing public health outcomes, noting Gates’ pivotal role in supporting these efforts.
This recognition solidifies Gates’ standing as a key ally in Nigeria’s development journey, even as his foundation continues to channel substantial resources toward tackling the continent’s most pressing challenges.
