The Bauchi State Pension Commission has launched a statewide sensitization campaign on the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), describing it as a sustainable reform designed to secure the welfare of workers and retirees.
Speaking at the flag-off in Warji Local Government Area, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Alhaji Ibrahim Inuwa, said Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammedโs administration has placed Bauchi among 25 states that have commenced full implementation of the CPS. He noted that the scheme reflects governmentโs commitment to safeguarding the future of pensioners.
According to him, the Commission will tour all 20 local government areas of the state to enlighten workers about the scheme. Under the arrangement, government contributes 10% while employees contribute 8% of monthly earnings.
Alhaji Inuwa disclosed that within eight months of implementation, the Commission had already begun phased gratuity payments and reduced inherited liabilities. He emphasized that the payments not only support pensioners but also stimulate the stateโs economy.
Civil servants were encouraged to register promptly to enjoy the schemeโs benefits.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Warji LGA, Hon. Aminu Barmini, represented by Alhaji Kawu Chadi, commended the initiative as a โwelcome developmentโ for workers and pledged the councilโs support in educating its workforce.
During the interactive session, workers raised questions about eligibility. The Commission clarified that the CPS applies to staff with at least three years to retirement, while those with less than three years will remain under the old Defined Pension Scheme. Officials also explained that workers are free to change Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) if dissatisfied with services.
Permanent Commissioner (Technical), Dr. Hayatu Mustapha, urged stakeholders to embrace the reform, comparing initial skepticism around the CPS to early resistance against BVN, NIN, and voter card registrations, all of which are now widely accepted.
Pamphlets containing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on the CPS were distributed to guide participants.
