Senegal’s President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has been elected as the new Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), succeeding Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio following the conclusion of the bloc’s latest summit.
His election comes at a pivotal moment for the regional body, which continues to navigate complex security threats, democratic governance concerns and efforts to strengthen economic integration among its member states. The new chairman is expected to lead discussions on tackling terrorism, political instability and enhancing regional cooperation while promoting sustainable development across West Africa.
President Faye assumes the chairmanship after President Bio completed his one-year tenure, during which ECOWAS intensified diplomatic engagements aimed at preserving peace, constitutional order and stability in the sub-region.
Since taking office as President of Senegal in 2024, Faye has projected a reform-driven leadership style focused on transparency, institutional reforms and regional collaboration. His emergence as ECOWAS Chairman is expected to further position Senegal at the centre of key regional initiatives as the bloc seeks to address evolving political and economic challenges.
More details are expected in the official communiqué to be issued at the end of the summit, outlining the priorities and agenda of the new ECOWAS leadership for the coming year.
