The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for Anambra State, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, has declared that the August 16 bye-election will determine the state’s political future.
Addressing market leaders in Awka on Saturday, Ukachukwu boasted that the poll would prove his party’s dominance in the state.
“The bye-election will take place in Anambra South senatorial zone to replace the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah,” Ukachukwu stated, adding that it would also cover Onitsha North 1 state constituency following the murder of Hon Justice Azuka.
“We will govern Anambra State and nothing will stop us. We will start with Saturday’s Anambra South Senate election and after that, we will know who is in charge of Anambra.
“We will use that senatorial election to test our popularity,” the APC candidate vowed.
Ukachukwu, who described himself as “a child of destiny,” criticized the current administration’s treatment of traders, promising to address excessive taxation if elected. “If we want to increase tax, we will discuss with the taxpayers first. If I become governor, I will deal decisively with the ‘Akodo’ people who are harassing and maiming people.”
The governorship hopeful pledged to revitalize Anambra’s markets, saying: “If I was the governor, there was no way I would have allowed NAFDAC to lock up the Head Bridge drug market.” He promised single-digit interest loans for traders and assured market leaders of representation in his government.
Dr. Kingsley Ezekwelu, Ukachukwu’s Chief of Staff, emphasized the need for Anambra to align with the federal government, warning: “If APC doesn’t win Anambra, most federal appointments won’t get to us. Even recruitment into the civil service is not favouring us because we’re not connected to the center.”
The APC team framed the August 16 vote as a critical indicator for November’s governorship election, with Ukachukwu concluding: “This is a time for action. Providing what the people need is not a favour.”
