Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that the 2027 presidential election will be his last outing, bringing an end to a political ambition that has spanned more than three decades.
Atiku, who has been contesting for the presidency since 1992, disclosed this during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Wednesday.
“The 2027 election will be my last outing,” he said.
When asked why Nigerians should vote for him after so many failed attempts, and considering his age, the former Vice President argued that Nigeria is grappling with a leadership problem. He added that he represents both the past and the future of the nation.
Beyond his own ambition, Atiku also recommended leadership training for young Nigerians, stressing that the country urgently needs it to build a pipeline of competent future leaders.
“It is something we need as a country,” he said.
The 2027 election is expected to be highly competitive, with Atiku likely to face off against incumbent President Bola Tinubu, assuming Tinubu seeks re-election, as well as other opposition figures.
Atiku was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019 and 2023, losing on both occasions to Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Tinubu respectively. He served as Vice President from 1999 to 2007 under President Olusegun Obasanjo.
