Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has revealed the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is executing a strategic countermeasure against Nigeria’s newly formed opposition coalition, declaring the party’s readiness for the 2027 political battle with carefully chosen words that exposed the ruling party’s confidence.
“Yes, we have discussed,” Sule confirmed during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics when asked about APC’s response to the coalition.
“And it is not something, actually, that I will disclose here. You know, as they are planning, we are planning. We’re not just sitting down watching them plan. So as they plan, we plan. And at the end of the day, the better plans will take over.” The governor stated.
The revelation comes weeks after opposition leaders including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar and four former governors formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their unified platform during a 2 July gathering at Abuja’s Yar’Adua Centre.
That event saw former Senate President David Mark and ex-Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola installed as interim leaders of the coalition, marking the most significant challenge to APC’s dominance since the 2015 elections.
Governor Sule’s comments took on a more provocative tone as he hinted at imminent defections designed to weaken the opposition bloc.
“We keep getting more and more governors from the PDP joining us. Very soon, you will hear another governor joining us,” he stated.
“You hear every day about senators decamping and coming back to the APC. Every day. These are all part of the plans—they’re not happening just by magic.” His words confirmed the APC’s strategy to replicate its successful 2015 and 2023 playbook of leveraging incumbency advantages to fracture opposition unity.
When pressed about opposition claims of intimidation tactics, Sule responded with dismissive precision: “I don’t underrate anybody, but the bottom line is, they must find something else to say. Jonathan’s era is completely different from this era.”
“The calibre of people that came together to form the APC—ANPP, APGA, ACN, CPC, and even the new PDP—is not the same kind of thing you’re seeing in this new opposition.”
