The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strengthened its majority in the House of Representatives following the defection of four federal lawmakers from the opposition parties.
The legislators, who officially announced their departure from their former parties on Tuesday, include three members who left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and one who decamped from the Labour Party (LP).
Those who defected from the PDP to the APC are Inuwa Garuba, who represents the Yamaltu/Deba federal constituency of Gombe State; Abdullahi El-Rasheed, representing the Dakku/Nafada federal constituency of Gombe State; and Mohammed Audu, the lawmaker for the Karim Lamido/Lau/Ardo-Kola federal constituency.
In a separate move, Obika Chinedu, the representative for the Abuja Municipal/Bwari federal constituency of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), formally switched allegiance from the Labour Party to the ruling APC.
The reasons for their departure from the opposition caucus are expected to be detailed in their respective letters of defection, which are to be read on the floor of the House.
