The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched an attack on Tanimu Turaki, the new factional Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), labelling his recent call for foreign powers to intervene in Nigeria as “reckless and unpatriotic.”
The condemnation was contained in a press statement issued on Tuesday by the APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, in response to Turaki’s remarks at a press conference earlier in the day.
While addressing the media on the internal crisis ravaging his party, Turaki had called on foreign powers to intervene in Nigeria to save the country from an alleged “Christian genocide” and to protect its democracy.
The APC described this appeal as a dangerous and shameless act that threatens national security and sovereignty.
“For a man declared National Chairman barely 72 hours ago by a faction of his deeply fractured party, Turaki looked and sounded desperate, at his wit’s end, confused, incoherent, and grossly lacking in stamina and capacity to manage his party’s crisis,” the statement read.
The ruling party expressed disappointment that instead of embarking on a peace-building mission to reconcile the warring factions within the PDP, Turaki’s first official act was to “call for foreign invasion of Nigeria as a solution to the self-inflicted internal crisis of his PDP.”
The APC framed Turaki’s statement as a stark contrast to the political conduct during the PDP’s own 16 years in power. The statement noted that despite what it called the PDP’s “ruthless subversion of opposition parties” during its tenure, there was never a call for foreign invasion to solve internal political crises.
“Turaki’s call is not only an admission of the party’s incapacity to manage its internal contradictions, it must be taken as a final certification of the PDP’s demise,” Morka declared.
The party expressed confidence that the international community would see through what it termed a “pitiful distraction” from the PDP’s failure of internal democracy and ongoing disintegration. The APC further warned that Turaki’s call exposes the “heightened desperation” of opposition leaders and the lengths they are willing to go to achieve their “sinister political agenda,” including “actively seeking destructive intervention of foreign powers on Nigerian soil.”
Concluding the statement, the APC urged Nigerians to “stand firm in support of our great Party, and the visionary leadership of President Bola Tinubu as we continue the arduous task of building progress and prosperity in all areas of our national life.”
