Ukum, Benue State – 11 December 2025: A coordinated security operation has successfully foiled an ambush and dismantled a kidnapping syndicate terrorising communities in Benue State, just weeks before the Christmas season.
Acting on credible intelligence, troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS) in synergy with the Nigeria Police Force, Zaki-Biam Division, and the Benue State Community Protection Guard, conducted a decisive raid on Thursday.
The operation targeted an armed criminal gang that had established an illegal roadblock along the route connecting Aturuku, Wembe, and Ayati villages in the Borkyo Council Ward of Ukum Local Government Area. The gang was notorious for ambushing, robbing, and kidnapping unsuspecting travellers.
Upon contact, the joint team engaged the criminals in a fierce gun battle, resulting in the neutralisation of three gang members. Others fled with gunshot wounds into nearby bushes. The security forces recovered two motorcycles used by the criminals and have intensified patrols and search operations to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Subsequent investigations identified the neutralised individuals as Sughter Abelebe and Sughnen Abelebe from Ugbaam Council Ward, and a third from Tse Kpeakaa, Kundav Council Ward. The group has been linked to a spate of recent kidnappings around the Zaki-Biam yam market and is believed to be connected to a notorious bandit kingpin operating in the Shitile axis of neighbouring Katsina-Ala LGA.
The Force Commander of the Joint Task Force OPWS, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops and partner forces for their courage, discipline, and seamless collaboration. He reaffirmed the command’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and ensuring a peaceful Yuletide season.
“This operation underscores our resolve to deepen intelligence-led missions and maintain relentless pressure on criminal elements threatening the peace of Benue and beyond,” Major General Gara stated.
The operation marks a significant escalation in security efforts to ensure a hitch-free Christmas and New Year period for residents.
