Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation, has said he is confident of defeating former Vice President Atiku Abubakar at the upcoming presidential primaries of the African Democratic Congress.
Speaking on Trust TV on Monday, Amaechi said while Atiku has a strong record of winning party primaries, he has failed to win a single presidential election. He argued that this makes electability a valid question against the former vice president.
“I hope this will be the first time he will fail a primary,” Amaechi said.
The former Rivers State governor also noted that unlike Atiku, he has never run for president before. He said this makes him a fresher candidate in the eyes of voters.
Amaechi also criticised President Bola Tinubu, accusing him of governing along ethnic lines. He contrasted Tinubu with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, whom he described as a nationalist.
He further stated that both Atiku and Peter Obi would govern Nigeria better than Tinubu if given the chance.
On the issue of zoning, Amaechi said he supports it only because Nigeria is not yet a united country. He stressed that every region and minority group must feel a sense of belonging.
The ADC presidential primary is scheduled for May 25, 2026.
