Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has been re-elected as the Chairman of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG).
The re-election took place on Thursday at the group’s 2026 Annual General Meeting, held on the sidelines of the Future Minerals Forum (FMF) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, according to a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori.
Dr. Alake was first unanimously elected as the pioneer chairman of the 24-member ministerial forum in 2024. Upon his re-election, he urged African nations to unite and collaboratively catalyze economic growth through the strategic development of solid minerals, stressing the urgent need to transform the continent’s mineral wealth into lasting prosperity.
The AGM ratified a new institutional framework, creating key leadership positions zoned across Africa’s sub-regions. Under the new structure, Dr. Alake continues as Chairman for West Africa.
The Minister of Mines of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Hon. Louis Watum Kabamba, was elected Vice-Chairman for Central Africa. Uganda retains the position of Secretary-General (East Africa), Mauritania was appointed Deputy Secretary-General (North Africa), and South Africa was zoned the position of Financial Secretary.
The meeting established a two-year tenure for the executive committee. To enhance operational effectiveness, Dr. Alake called on member states to agree on minimum financial contributions to strengthen the group’s credibility and transparency before the global community.
The ministers also resolved to hold quarterly meetings and ratified the establishment of key standing committees. In a related Leadership Roundtable at the FMF, Dr. Alake emphasized that mineral production alone cannot drive economic transformation without reliable infrastructure and deliberate value-addition strategies, citing continental corridors like the Lobito Corridor as models for success.
