Former Nasarawa State Governor, Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, is poised to assume the role of National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Spear News can report.
If confirmed, he will succeed Abdullahi Ganduje in a move designed to consolidate the party’s unity ahead of the 2027 elections
The Progressive Governorsโ Forum (PGF), led by its Chairman and Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, held a closed door session yesterday before proceeding to the State House for a private briefing with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
While the details of their discussions remain undisclosed, sources indicate the governors are resisting external pressure to fast-track leadership changes.
In a sudden shift, the APCโs National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, originally slated for 10:00 AM at the partyโs Abuja headquarters, was abruptly rescheduled to 2:00 PM and relocated to the State House Banquet Hall.
The last minute change suggests intense behind-the-scenes negotiations over the partyโs leadership structure.
As of the time of filing this report, a credible party source, speaking to Spear News on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the partyโs leadership is carefully evaluating options to ensure a smooth transition, avoiding any disruption to the upcoming national convention scheduled for December.
The source revealed that Al-Makura is now “a leading contender” and could soon be announced “as the partyโs National Chairman”.
However, discussions remain ongoing over whether an interim chairman should instead oversee party affairs until the convention.
“Unless if there is a last minute change, he will be announced”, a source told Spear News.
“Should Al-Makuraโs appointment proceed, his position would likely be ratified at the convention without further contention.”
He said the party is keen to stabilise its leadership structure early, ensuring its internal machinery remains functional ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A stalwart of the Buhari political dynasty within the APC, Al-Makura hails from the CPC faction and is seen as a potential successor to Buhariโs influential role in the party.
