In his efforts to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, Abia State Governor Alex Otti met with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday.
The high level discussion comes just days after Governor Otti personally visited the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) at a correctional facility in Sokoto State, where Kanu is serving his sentence.
Otti’s visit to the prison at the weekend included Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel; the Abia State Attorney-General, Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN); and his Special Adviser on Media, Ferdinand Ekeoma. Officials from the Sokoto State Government were also present.
The governor has publicly stated that securing Kanu’s freedom is a priority for his administration, announcing an “already agreed strategy” to that effect. “While Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is free to appeal his conviction, Iโm happy to inform you that I have activated, and will continue to work on, the already agreed strategy until his freedom is secured,” Otti said in a recent statement.
Tuesday’s meeting with President Tinubu is widely seen as a critical step in that strategic push, moving the matter from the prison facility directly to the highest office in the land. The talks are believed to focus on finding a political and legal resolution to the protracted and deeply divisive case, which remains a sensitive issue in Nigeria’s South-East region.
No official statements were released immediately following the closed-door meeting at the Villa, but it marks the most direct intervention by a sitting state governor to broker a federal resolution to Kanu’s detention.
