The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has publicly challenged Governor Ademola Adeleke to cut short his extended stay in the United States and return to his official duties, questioning the purpose of a trip that began over a month ago.
The opposition party levelled serious allegations of excessive spending, claiming the governor’s administration has expended over N6 billion on international travel since he took office in 2022, with no tangible foreign investments to show for it.
In a statement issued in Osogbo by the state APC Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, the party condemned the governor’s lengthy absence. The trip, which commenced quietly, was later attributed by the governor’s office to preparations for the wedding of his nephew, the music star Davido. However, with the wedding concluded weeks ago, Adeleke has remained abroad, with his office stating he is now “holding meetings with potential investors.”
This justification has been met with sharp skepticism. The APC cited a viral photograph that allegedly showed the governor in a casual setting to challenge the seriousness of his official agenda.
“It is deeply troubling that while Osun faces pressing issues, Governor Adeleke is seen in informal environments abroad, claiming to be wooing investors,” Lawal stated. “The image of a sitting governor playing drums in a U.S. clubhouse raises serious concerns about the seriousness of his leadership.”
Beyond the travel costs, the APC criticized the governor for neglecting pressing domestic issues, including a worsening security situation that has allegedly led local government workers to withdraw from duty and an unresolved state recruitment exercise.
“It is heartless to raise the hopes of over 32,000 job seekers, collect application fees, and then fail to follow through on employment promises,” the party’s statement read. It further accused Adeleke of holding “the unenviable record of sacking 1,500 teachers without a single replacement in three years.”
The party urged Adeleke to demonstrate accountability and return to the state to address the critical needs of the people of Osun.
