The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially unveiled former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as its presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the 2027 general election, presenting the ticket as a “unity and rescue mission” for Nigeria.
The party announced on Sunday that Amaechi, who emerged as runner-up in the ADC presidential primaries, was selected following extensive consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women stakeholders, and representatives of all geopolitical zones.
According to the ADC, the Atiku-Amaechi ticket represents more than a political alliance.
“This is the coming together of two tested statesmen with the experience, national reach, and leadership capacity required to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges and reposition the country for a new era of prosperity, security, and inclusive development,” the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said in a statement.
Amaechi brings to the ticket a public service record that spans all major pillars of democratic governance. He served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two terms as Governor of Rivers State, and later as Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation, where he led ambitious rail modernization initiatives.
“Few political leaders in Nigeria today possess such extensive and balanced experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government,” Abdullahi noted. “This depth of experience will be invaluable in supporting the next ADC administration from day one.”
The party argued that beyond Amaechi’s credentials, his political influence across the South-South and wider Southern Nigeria, his reputation as a reform-minded administrator, and his proven ability to build coalitions make him uniquely positioned to complement Atiku’s candidacy.
The ADC described the partnership as a truly national ticket that bridges regions, generations, and political traditions.
“The Atiku-Amaechi ticket sends a clear message: the ADC is prepared to govern, prepared to unite the nation, and prepared to deliver results,” the statement read.
At a time when millions of Nigerians are demanding competent leadership, economic revival, job creation, security, and national unity, the party expressed confidence that the newly unveiled ticket would energize its growing coalition and inspire hope among citizens.
The ADC called on all party members, coalition partners, civil society organizations, youth groups, women leaders, and Nigerians of goodwill to join what it described as a historic journey to renew the nation and secure a better future for generations to come.
