The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has officially declared his readiness to contest in the 2027 presidential election, while simultaneously alleging the existence of a plot by the Federal Government to prevent his candidacy.
Obi made the declaration on Saturday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, during the OBIDIENT Conference and official declaration for the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The event, themed โActivating the PO Effect in ADC,โ served as the platform for Obi to address his supporters and outline his political future.
In a strongly worded address, the former Anambra State governor alleged that he has credible information that the current administration does not want him to appear on the ballot in the next election cycle.
โI left Labour Party when I got informed that as long as I remain in the party, INEC will not recognise its leadership, that the Federal Government doesnโt want me on ballot paper,โ Obi stated. โBut I want to assure you that I will contest the coming election even if it holds in their bedroom, and if they donโt want to transmit the results, we will transmit it for them.โ
Obiโs move to the ADC signals a significant realignment of the “Obidient” movement, which he hopes will serve as a new vehicle to challenge the status quo in 2027. He urged Nigerians to join him in a collective effort to “rescue” the nation for future generations, whom he claims will bear the brunt of decades of bad governance.
The presidential hopeful did not mince words regarding his critique of the current administration, accusing it of reckless borrowing. He noted that the bulk of the loans being acquired would be repaid between 2045 and 2050โa burden he argued would fall on future generations long after the current leaders are gone.
โNigeria must get it right in 2027,โ Obi declared, insisting that for democracy to be credible, election results must be transmitted online in real-time.
Outlining his vision for the country, Obi promised to invest heavily in education and healthcare, stating that pulling people out of poverty is the most effective way to reduce criminality. He also vowed to tackle corruption head-on, claiming the menace could be reduced by 60 percent if a leader and their family distance themselves from corrupt practices.
โWhen I became governor of Anambra State, I advised my wife to forget about the office of first lady because we were not elected together. I approved over 100 Certificates of Occupancy (C of Os) for government lands, but have none for myself or my family,โ he said, challenging anyone with contrary evidence to petition the appropriate authorities.
Echoing Obiโs sentiments, the coordinator of the Obidient movement worldwide, Tanko Yunusa, called on supporters to channel their collective energy into the ADC, describing it as the “vehicle for transformation and victory in 2027.”
