Alhaji Sule Lamido, former governor of Jigawa State and a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has declared his intention to support the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2027 elections while maintaining his membership in the PDP.
Lamido, who had previously maintained that Tinubu could not be stopped, likened his stance to that of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike—a PDP member who actively supports the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The decision follows a recent meeting in Abuja, where Lamido and other senior PDP figures aligned with the “Concerned PDP Leaders” group resolved to collaborate with the ADC.
This move set the stage for last week’s formal adoption of the ADC as the primary opposition coalition platform aimed at defeating President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Notably, some PDP leaders within Wike’s faction have already pledged to campaign for Tinubu’s re-election.
However, in an interview with BBC Hausa, Lamido clarified his position, stating that Nigerian politics should transcend rigid party lines.
He emphasised his focus on supporting credible candidates rather than blindly backing a political party.
He regretted that most political parties in Nigeria are beleaguered by challenges leading to divisions which “needs to be addressed critically.”
Noting that PDP’s problem is self-inflicted, Lamido said he is not afraid of anyone and assured that he will remain and salvage the party.
He identified the political problems in the party as hypocrisy and selfishness. He however said his goal is to emancipate the society by remaining in PDP while supporting ADC.
