Edo State Commissioner for Information and member of the 2027 Presidential Campaign Committee, Kassim Afebgua, has described Abba Atiku Abubakar’s support for President Bola Tinubu as a vote of no confidence on his father, former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, noting that the son has severed political ties with his father.
Afebgua stated this in an article titled “How Atiku Abubakar’s Son ‘Disowned’ His Own Father, Choosing President Tinubu; A Note of Caution to Nigerian Voters.”
Spear News Nigeria recalls that Abba Atiku first announced his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) January, at the National Assembly in Abuja, where he was received by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin alongside APC leaders from the North-East geopolitical zone.
He subsequently formalised his membership on Monday, January 26, 2026, after obtaining his APC membership card at Gwadabawa Ward in Yola North Local Government Area of Adamawa State, before proceeding to the party’s state secretariat in Yola.
In a more recent development, Abba Atiku visited the APC National Secretariat in Abuja on Friday, October 30, where he pledged 10 campaign buses to support mobilisation for President Tinubu’s re-election and announced plans for a two-million-man march across the six geopolitical zones. He also unveiled the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation, a political support platform, and declared that no political party can stop President Tinubu’s return to Aso Rock in 2027.
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, his father, is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election and is seeking to unseat President Tinubu. The younger Abubakar had previously worked for his father in two previous presidential elections before severing political ties and pitching his tent with the ruling party.
In the article, Mr Afebgua argued that Abba Atiku’s decision amounted to a public declaration that his father was unfit for the presidency.
“This move by Honourable Abba Atiku Abubakar is a huge statement of disavowal for his father’s aspirations. It conveys to the Nigerian electorates that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is not to be trusted with the leadership of the country,” he wrote.
“When a son tells a father barefacedly that the father’s ambition is not worth the trouble, it becomes a signal advising rejection to the public. It begs the question, ‘who can know the father more than the son?’ The son has obliquely revealed the dark side of his father’s sincerity and honesty of intentions.”
He added: “Nigerians have simply been told to be cautious of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s real intention in seeking to preside over the country. This, without a doubt, is the most poignant disapproval anyone can get in the heat of electoral campaigns.”
Afebgua further argued that the younger Abubakar placed national stability above what he called the “vaulting ambition” of his father, quoting him as saying: “We need to give Mr President more years to finish the good work he has started.”
He said President Tinubu deserves a second term to consolidate his reform agenda, citing the subsidy removal initiative, which he said has blocked leakages in the petroleum sector and opened up new opportunities for a robust economy.
“That President Tinubu deserves a second term to consolidate on his reform agenda is unarguable. His reforms have attracted credible commendation from financial experts, industry players and foreign financial institutions,” Afebgua wrote.
He urged Nigerians to join what he described as the move for the President’s re-election, asking: “What are you waiting for?”
