The Federal Government has pledged urgent action to secure the release of students abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, in the Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The commitment was conveyed in a statement released on Monday, November 17, 2025, by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.
According to the statement, the government expressed deep concern over the incident and solidarity with affected families.
“The Federal Government expresses deep concern and solidarity with the families of the female students abducted… We share in their pain and are firmly committed to bringing the girls home safely,” the government said.
President Bola Tinubu, the statement added, reaffirmed his administration’s constitutional duty to protect Nigerians.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated that protecting every Nigerian, especially schoolchildren, remains a solemn responsibility of the State. The government condemns the reprehensible attack on innocent students and the killing of school officials who were carrying out their noble duty.”
Security and intelligence agencies have reportedly been instructed to intensify rescue efforts.
“Our security and intelligence agencies have been issued clear directives to locate, rescue, and safely return the students, and to ensure that the perpetrators face justice. The Federal Government will not relent until this objective is achieved.”
The statement also underscored the government’s ongoing commitment to internal security reforms.
“We assure Nigerians that strengthening internal security remains a top priority.”
It noted that broader national defence upgrades are underway to better prevent and respond to threats.
“The Federal Government is recalibrating the nation’s military, policing, and intelligence capabilities to more effectively prevent these attacks and respond with greater speed and precision whenever threats arise.”
In addition, the government highlighted enhanced security cooperation with regional allies.
“Nigeria is also reinforcing cooperation with regional partners through ECOWAS, the African Union, and the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) to secure our borders and disrupt terrorist and criminal networks. We urge the public to remain calm and confident.”
The abduction occurred early Monday morning when heavily armed assailants attacked the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga. The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed that at least 25 students were taken.
Police spokesperson CSP Nafi’u Abubakar Kotarkoshi reported that the attackers invaded the school around 4 a.m., engaging police personnel on duty in a gun battle before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the girls from their hostel.
One staff member, identified as Hassan Makuku, was killed during the attack, while another, Ali Shehu, sustained a gunshot wound to the hand.
Following the incident, Commissioner of Police Bello Muhammad Sani deployed additional police tactical teams, supported by military personnel and local vigilante groups, to bolster security in the area and aid ongoing rescue operations.
