Ilhan Omar, a US Congresswoman, has a fierce criticism against President Donald Trump and his Republican allies, declaring that their recent behaviour shows America is “being led by idiots”.
Her remarks came in response to a social media post by Trump in which he attacked Omar, who is of Somali heritage, accusing her of “telling us how to run our country”. The President also demanded her impeachment after a Republican effort to formally censure her narrowly failed in Congress.
The dispute stems from Omar’s response to the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on 10 September. After Omar shared a post that some interpreted as blaming Kirk for his own death, Republican lawmaker Nancy Mace put forward a resolution to censure her for “smearing Charlie Kirk”. It was rejected by a vote of 214–213.
Trump’s post read: “Somalia is consistently ranked among the world’s most corrupt countries, including bribery, embezzlement, and a dysfunctional government. All of this, and Ilhan Omar tells us how to run America! … What SCUM we have in our country, telling us what to do, and how to do it.”
Appearing on The Weekend Prime, Omar dismissed the President’s comments, describing him as “always unhinged, always derailed, always creating chaos”. She also mocked his suggestion that she could be impeached, noting that “members of congress can’t be impeached”.
She argued that Trump and his supporters repeatedly “expose themselves for how stupid they are”, which she called “embarrassing for us as a country”.
Referring to threats from some Republicans to deport her, Omar stated: “When they’re saying they’re going to deport me knowing fully well that you cannot deport an American citizen, what that displays for not just Americans but folks on an international platform is that our country is being led by idiots, and that is not something that we would be comfortable with.”
She concluded by expressing “great sadness that these are the kinds of people representing us.”
