In a sharp rebuke to Beijing, United States Congressman Riley Moore has declared that China will not be permitted to dictate American foreign policy, following China’s expression of support for Nigeria amidst threats from former U.S. President Donald Trump.
The diplomatic confrontation came few days after Trump, in a post on his Truth Social platform, issued a stark warning to the Nigerian government. He accused it of turning a blind eye to what he termed the “genocide of Christians” in the West African nation and instructed the U.S.
Department of War to prepare for potential military action. “If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet,” Trump wrote, threatening to halt all U.S. aid and potentially intervene “guns-a-blazing” to “completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists.”
In response, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, addressed the matter during a press conference, firmly siding with Nigeria. Describing Nigeria as a “strategic partner,” Mao Ning condemned any form of external interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs and declared China’s strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
This show of support from Beijing prompted a fierce reaction from Congressman Moore, who represents West Virginia’s 2nd District. Taking to his X account on Tuesday, the lawmaker launched a robust defense of Trump’s position and a scathing attack on China’s credibility to comment on the matter.
“President Trump is absolutely right to defend our brothers and sisters in Christ who are suffering horrific persecution, and even martyrdom, for their faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” Moore stated.
He forcefully added, “China will not dictate our foreign policy to us, and we will not be lectured to by a Communist autocracy that recently arrested 30 Christian pastors for their faith and throws ethnic minorities in concentration camps.”
