The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a fresh security alert warning American citizens of a possible terrorist threat targeting US facilities and US-affiliated schools across the country.
In a security notice published on its official website on Monday, the embassy urged American nationals to exercise increased vigilance and take additional precautions when visiting US diplomatic missions and American-affiliated educational institutions in Nigeria.
Key Details of the Alert
The embassy’s warning specifically identified potential risks to:
· The US Embassy in Abuja
· The US Consulate General in Lagos
· Schools in Nigeria affiliated with the United States
” The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens of a possible terrorist threat against U.S. facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the statement read.
Safety Recommendations
The diplomatic mission advised American citizens to implement several security measures:
· Vary travel times and routes to and from US facilities and affiliated schools to avoid establishing predictable patterns
· Keep mobile phones fully charged in case of emergency communication needs
· Maintain awareness of surroundings at all times
· Keep a low profile in public spaces
· Review personal security plans and ensure they are up to date
· Avoid crowds and demonstrations where possible
· Familiarise yourself with emergency exits when entering buildings
· Stay alert in all public places
Context and Timing
The embassy did not specify the source of the threat in its announcement. However, the warning comes amid heightened global tensions following recent military actions involving the United States and Israel against Iran.
President Donald Trump reportedly ordered US bombings targeting jihadists on Christmas Day, though specific details of those operations were not elaborated in the announcement.
The alert also follows recent protests in Lagos and several northern Nigerian states by members of the Islamic Movement leadership, who demonstrated against the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in strikes by the United States and Israel.
Reports indicate that Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, wife of Iran’s Supreme Leader, reportedly died from injuries sustained during these strikes at her residence in Tehran.
