The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed the death of two persons and injuries to 10 others following a lone road crash along the Gombe–Yola Road in Gombe State.
The Sector Commander of the corps in the state, Samson Kaura, disclosed this in Gombe, stating that the accident occurred on Friday at about 7:40 p.m. in Gona community.
According to Mr Kaura, preliminary findings indicate that the crash was caused by a tyre burst, which led to the loss of control of the vehicle. He explained that the impact of the crash resulted in varying degrees of injuries among the passengers, including head injuries, bruises and multiple body cuts.
He said the injured victims were promptly evacuated to the Federal Teaching Hospital for medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the mortuary of the same facility.
The FRSC boss noted that further investigation into the incident is ongoing but warned that tyre bursts are often linked to underlying factors such as overloading, excessive speed and poor vehicle maintenance.
He urged motorists to exercise caution on the highways, stressing the need for regular vehicle checks, especially on tyres, and adherence to safety regulations. He also cautioned drivers against overloading and reckless driving, describing them as major contributors to avoidable road crashes.
Mr Kaura emphasised that drivers must prioritise safety over speed or profit, reminding them that their actions on the road have consequences not only for themselves but also for passengers and their families.
The incident adds to growing concerns over road safety compliance on major highways, as authorities continue to call for stricter adherence to traffic rules to reduce the frequency of fatal accidents across the country.
