— Alarm as bandit camps receive fresh arms, night-vision gear, and foreign-trained recruits

Alarm has been sounded across eastern Sokoto State after credible intelligence confirmed that armed fighters loyal to wanted and notorious bandit commander, Bello Turji are currently engaged in intensive combat drills near the Sokoto-Zamfara border.
According to findings made available to Spear News Nigeria, the training sessions are happening in several rural settlements, including Bingabale Kudu, Bafarawa East, and Bargaja, where Turji’s men have been observed practicing with newly delivered rifles and tactical equipment.
The intelligence was shared by Basharu Altine, coordinator of the Sokoto chapter of the Movement for Social Justice and Good Governance, a civil society organisation tracking insecurity in the northwest. Altine disclosed that the drills are being supervised by Turji’s close allies, including Illa Manawa and a sibling of the bandit kingpin identified simply as Dodo.
“These fighters are not just brandishing weapons—they are being trained in tactical formations and weapons handling,” Altine said. “The arms in their possession appear to be part of a fresh consignment, some of which bear resemblance to those used in recent deadly clashes with military troops.”
The report further raised concerns about the arrival of new combatants in the area, some of whom are believed to have acquired battle experience from insurgent theatres outside the northwest region.
Intelligence sources indicated that these newcomers are serving as instructors, passing on advanced warfare techniques to Turji’s local operatives. Their presence, according to Altine, suggests a deliberate effort to upgrade the group’s fighting capability.
Night-vision goggles and other surveillance equipment are also said to have been delivered to the camps, giving the bandits a potential edge in nocturnal operations—a development that has heightened anxiety among security watchers.
Investigative leads have also pointed to the involvement of two other suspected bandit leaders—Haru Dole and Ibrahim Chimo—in the logistics chain that brought the weapons into the region.
Altine noted that Chimo, in particular, appears to be forging a stronger operational relationship with Turji, raising fears of a merger that could expand the theatre of violence across state lines.
“There is mounting evidence that this partnership is not incidental,” Altine stated. “It points to a calculated move to consolidate control over border communities and possibly launch offensives against local government strongholds.”
Rainy Season Offensive Feared
Perhaps most alarming is the intelligence suggesting that the ongoing training may be precursor to a coordinated assault on selected council headquarters before the rains intensify. Military analysts have long noted that the rainy season often restricts aerial surveillance and ground troop movements, creating windows of opportunity for non-state armed groups.
Altine has therefore urged security forces to act swiftly, carrying out targeted patrols and intelligence-led raids to disrupt the training camps before they become fully operational launchpads for attacks.
As at press time, the Nigerian Army and the Police Command in Sokoto had yet to officially respond to the allegations. Residents in the affected border areas have been advised to remain cautious and report any unusual activities to the nearest security post.
