The Tanimu Turaki faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has resolved to challenge its recent Court of Appeal loss at the Supreme Court, insisting the fight over the party’s leadership is far from over.
The faction’s resolve follows Wednesday’s judgment by a special panel of the appellate court, which dismissed an appeal filed by the Chairman of its Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara, alongside seven others.
The appellants had asked the court to set aside a Federal High Court ruling that declined to order the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the Interim National Working Committee led by Turaki — a body constituted by the party’s National Executive Committee after a Supreme Court judgment.
The three-man panel, comprising Justice Ugochukwu Anthony Ogakwu, Justice Laja Balogun and Justice Ruquayat Oremei Ayoola, who delivered the lead judgment, upheld the lower court’s decision and threw out the appeal.
Reacting through its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the faction said it respects the ruling but will not abandon its pursuit of what it calls justice rooted in truth.
“No matter how deep the truth is buried, if those seeking it are persistent in digging, it will one day resurface,” the statement said, adding that lawyers have been instructed to file an appeal at the Supreme Court immediately.
The faction also stressed the importance of a vibrant opposition, warning that the PDP must provide a credible alternative to the ruling party rather than become its appendage.
“Democracy survives only when the opposition is strong enough to effectively engage the government,” it said, urging members to remain steadfast as the case moves to the nation’s highest court.
The battle now shifts to the Supreme Court, where the faction hopes to overturn the concurrent findings of the lower courts.
