United States President Donald Trump has asserted that American military intervention has brought an end to the killings of Christian communities in Nigeria.
Speaking on Friday at an event in Washington, Trump detailed his administration’s counter-terrorism operations, emphasising the impact of US action in Nigeria.
He claimed that the intervention dealt a decisive blow to groups responsible for attacks on Christian populations in areas ravaged by insurgency.
Reflecting on the pre-intervention period, the US leader said:
“They have a great Christian population. They were being butchered, butchered thousands and thousands of people were being killed, children, women, old people, just being slaughtered, hatched to death.”
Trump went on to state that the military operation had successfully dismantled the command structure of the perpetrators:
“We hit them very hard. We knocked out their leader. We knocked out their second leader and their third leader.”
He further suggested that the remaining elements had been deterred from further attacks, adding:
“They know that if they go further, the attack will be far greater and that they don’t want to really get involved anymore so much.”
