Troops of the Joint Task Force Operation HADIN KAI have recovered the bodies of five Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists during ongoing exploitation operations in Borno State, military authorities have confirmed.
The recovery, made on Thursday along the Jemmu–Alagarno axis northeast of Kukawa, brings the total number of terrorist bodies recovered since the failed attack on troops on 29 August to nine.
According to a statement issued by the acting Military Information Officer, Captain Mohammed Goni, the decomposing bodies are believed to be those of terrorists who sustained fatal injuries from Nigerian Air Force airstrikes during the initial engagement. The terrorists had reportedly abandoned their dead and wounded colleagues while fleeing under pressure from ground troops and aerial support.
During a search of the area, troops also recovered one AK-47 rifle, a solar panel, a camouflage shuttle bag, a prayer mat, empty ammunition links, and a raincoat. The recovered items are in addition to equipment and personal effects earlier discovered along the terrorists’ withdrawal route.
The military said the bodies were buried in situ, while troops continued to exploit the general area before returning safely to base.
Operation HADIN KAI authorities commended the troops for their resilience and reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining pressure on terrorist groups, denying them freedom of action, and preventing any regrouping that could threaten communities in the North East.
The Joint Task Force reassured the public that operations would continue to consolidate recent gains and create a more secure environment for socio-economic activities across the region.
