Troops operating in Taraba State have intercepted two suspected gunrunners and recovered hundreds of rounds of ammunition during a routine patrol.
The operation, carried out by personnel of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army stationed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Wukari, took place along the WukariโIkyaior Road in Wukari Local Government Area on Thursday, 19 March 2026.
According to a statement released by the brigade, the suspects were apprehended during a stop-and-search detail. They were identified as Mr. Wisdom Soomga, a 32-year-old from Ukum Local Government Area in neighboring Benue State, and Mr. Elisha Danladi, a 38-year-old native of Wukari. The two men were traveling on a motorcycle at the time of their arrest.
A search of the suspects and their vehicle led to the discovery of 444 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition. Security sources say this caliber is commonly used in automatic weapons, highlighting the potential danger the shipment posed had it reached its destination.
In addition to the ammunition, troops recovered the motorcycle used for transportation, cash totaling โฆ29,200, two mobile phones, ATM cards, and personal effects, including charms.
Both suspects are currently in military custody as investigators work to determine the source of the ammunition and its intended recipients.
Commending the troops for their vigilance, the Commander of 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, stated that the arrest was in line with the directives of the Chief of Army Staff to aggressively pursue criminal elements and enhance security across the state.
He urged the personnel to maintain their operational tempo and assured law-abiding citizens of the military’s commitment to protecting lives and property. The public was also encouraged to continue providing security agencies with timely and credible information.
The Commander further emphasized that acts of professionalism and courage displayed during such operations would be met with recognition, reinforcing a culture of discipline and reward within the brigade.
