Troops of Sector 1 of Operation UDO KA, in collaboration with other security agencies, have foiled an attack by suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network, during an intelligence-led patrol in Imezi Owa.
According to the military, the operation was carried out on May 6, 2026, following intelligence reports and efforts to track suspected terrorist collaborators within the community.
The troops were said to be advancing on foot into the community when they came under attack from a building allegedly used as a hideout by the suspected terrorists. Three security personnel sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire.
Despite the ambush, the troops reportedly maintained operational control, repelled the attackers, and secured the area. The injured personnel were immediately evacuated and are currently receiving treatment at a military medical facility.
The military disclosed that during the firefight, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) allegedly stored inside the building detonated, causing a fire outbreak that razed the structure.
Following the operation, troops conducted further searches around the area and reportedly recovered additional IEDs, improvised hand grenades, and a shrine allegedly used for ritual activities. The shrine was subsequently destroyed to prevent its continued use for criminal operations.
Security operatives also arrested one suspected collaborator during the operation. The suspect, alongside recovered items, has been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force, Ezeagu Division, for further investigation.
The military reassured residents of Imezi Owa and surrounding communities that ongoing operations are being carried out professionally with a commitment to protecting lives and property.
Residents were urged to remain calm, avoid harbouring criminal elements, and continue cooperating with security agencies by providing useful information.
Headquarters Joint Task Force South East Operation UDO KA also warned members and sympathisers of the proscribed IPOB/ESN groups to desist from illegal activities or face the full consequences of the law.
