In a decisive counteroperation, Nigerian troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) successfully repelled a coordinated attack by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on their location in New Marte, Borno State, in the early hours of Tuesday.

The insurgents, who attempted to infiltrate the military base, were met with fierce resistance from ground troops backed by air support. The Air Component of OPHK provided critical Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) and conducted precision strikes, decimating scores of fleeing terrorists.
Defend Headquarters confirmed that two soldiers lost their lives in the encounter. However, troops recovered a Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) SUV abandoned by the terrorists during the pursuit. Additionally, several motorcycles used by the insurgents were destroyed in targeted airstrikes.
A post-operation assessment revealed multiple terrorist casualties, with blood trails along their withdrawal routes indicating heavy losses.
In a related incident, troops also thwarted an attempted attack on the Forward Operating Base in Kumshe, further demonstrating the military’s heightened operational readiness.
Captain Reuben Kovangiya, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the Theatre Command, stated that the successful defense highlights improved joint operations and teamwork in the fight against terrorism. He reiterated the military’s commitment to restoring peace and enabling socio-economic stability in the Northeast.
The foiled attack marks another setback for insurgent groups in the region as Nigerian forces continue to intensify counterterrorism operations.
