Troops of the Nigerian Army have destroyed the stronghold of notorious bandit leader, Gwaska Dan Karmi and neutralized over 100 terrorists following a fierce gun battle in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The operation, conducted under Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA by troops of 8 Division, was launched on January 31, 2026, based on credible intelligence indicating that a large bandit congregation of over 100 fighters was coordinating planned attacks on communities and military supply routes.

Lieutenant Colonel Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations 8 Division Nigerian Army / Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, revealed that after days of meticulous surveillance, ground forces supported by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) engaged the militants at the identified camp.
The bandits attempted a flanking maneuver but were overwhelmed by the superior firepower and tactical coordination of the troops. Scores were killed in the exchange, and the camp was subsequently set ablaze before troops completed their mission.
Air assets remain active, conducting interdiction missions to track and engage fleeing remnants, while ground troops maintain control of the area.
The Nigerian Army acknowledged that some gallant soldiers paid the supreme price during the intense encounter, and one combat vehicle was struck and burnt by enemy RPG fire.
The service has honored the fallen and reaffirmed its resolve to continue dismantling bandit networks across the region.
