The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has expressed confidence that a second term for President Bola Tinubu will ensure the completion of Phase II of the Bodo Bonny Road project in Rivers State.
Umahi made this known through the Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, during a Medallion Award Presentation organised by the Bodo Bonny Road and Bridges Peace Committee on Friday in Abuja.
He described the project as more than just infrastructure, noting that it represents leadership, continuity, partnership, and peace.
According to him, the road serves as a vital economic and social link, connecting coastal communities to the mainland while boosting commerce and fostering unity in the Niger Delta.
“The road is more than a physical link. It is a bridge to opportunity, a lifeline for commerce, and a symbol of national cohesion, connecting coastal communities to the mainland and opening doors to prosperity,” he said.
Umahi commended President Tinubu for prioritising the project under the Renewed Hope Agenda and urged communities in the Bodo Bonny axis to support the President’s second term bid to ensure its completion.
He disclosed that approval had already been granted for Phase II of the project and that the ministry was making arrangements to commence work.
The minister also praised the organisers of the award ceremony, noting that those entrusted with responsibility must be held accountable for delivering results.
Earlier, Chairman of the Planning Committee for the award ceremony, Chief Jasper Jumbo, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for addressing a project that had lingered for nearly four decades.
He noted that despite being a major hub for oil and gas activities, the Bodo Bonny corridor had remained disconnected from the mainland, with residents relying heavily on water transportation.
“This disconnect poses challenges not only to commerce and industry but also to the daily lives, safety, and aspirations of our people,” he said.
Jumbo, however, said the situation was gradually improving due to renewed commitment from the government and stakeholders.
He called for continued cooperation among communities, contractors, and government officials to ensure the successful completion of the project.
He also commended Umahi for facilitating the approval of Phase II, describing it as a major step toward linking coastal communities with the East West Road and improving access across the region.
Jumbo further expressed hope that the President would be re elected in 2027 to sustain ongoing projects and reforms, while urging continuity in leadership within the Ministry of Works to maintain the pace of development.
