President Bola Tinubu has approved the renewal of the appointment of Professor Ayo Omotayo as the Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru.
The new mandate, which is for a final term of four years, will allow the seasoned academic to continue in the top role at the prestigious policy hub.
The renewal was confirmed in a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy), on March 4, 2026.
Professor Omotayo was initially appointed to the position by former President Muhammadu Buhari in November 2021, with his nomination later confirmed by the Senate in February 2022.
An accomplished scholar, Omotayo is a Professor of Environmental Sustainability. He attended the University of Ibadan from 1980 to 1990, where he obtained a PhD in Geography.
His career in academia began at the Lagos State University (LASU) in 1985.
He rose swiftly through the ranks, becoming a Senior Lecturer in 1992 at the young age of 30. Prior to his appointment as Director-General of the National Institute in 2021, he served as the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at LASU from 2012 to 2017, and was also the Director of the Centre for Planning at the university.
