President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reappointment of Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi as the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for a second and final term of five years.
The renewal of Dr Audi’s tenure, which takes effect from Friday, February 27, 2026, comes just as his initial five-year term concluded.
He was first appointed to the position in 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
This was contained in a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, on Saturday, February 28. According to the statement, Dr Audi’s renewed mandate is part of President Tinubu’s strategic realignment of the nation’s security architecture.
“The President has charged the reappointed Commandant-General to reposition the service to play a more significant role in the country’s security architecture. This is particularly crucial as the Nigeria Police Force refocuses on its primary responsibility of protecting citizens from bandits, kidnappers, and terrorists”, the statement read.
Dr Audi, who was born on September 30, 1967, in Laminga Town, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, brings a wealth of experience and academic excellence to the role.
His educational background includes a PhD in Public Administration from Nasarawa State University, Keffi (2014), and a Master’s in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (2019).
He also holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Calabar (2001) and a bachelor’s degree in Physical and Health Education from Ahmadu Bello University (1995).
His journey with the NSCDC began in November 1996 as a volunteer. After his basic officer training in 1997, he was deployed as a Divisional Officer in Obi Local Government Area, Nasarawa State. He rose through the ranks, serving in various state commands before being promoted to the rank of Commandant in 2007 and deployed to the National Headquarters in Abuja.
The statement further noted that Dr Audi was actively involved in activities commemorating the 2026 World Civil Defence Day at the NSCDC National Headquarters in Abuja on the very day his first term ended. He is expected to resume his duties with this renewed mandate on Monday, March 2.
