President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has moved to immortalise the late revered Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, by approving the renaming of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare (FUHSA), in his honour.
The President announced the historic decision on Saturday during a condolence visit to Bauchi State, where he paid a solemn visit to the family of the late cleric at his central mosque.
President Tinubu, in a heartfelt address, described the late Sheikh as an exceptional spiritual leader whose life was wholly devoted to the pursuit of knowledge, selfless service, and the peaceful propagation of Islam. He stated that renaming the tertiary institution was a fitting tribute to immortalise the scholar’s enduring legacy.
“Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi was a national icon, a symbol of humility, discipline, and peaceful coexistence. His teachings have positively shaped generations of followers and contributed immensely to our national unity and social harmony,” President Tinubu said.
The President emphasised that the decision reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to recognising outstanding individuals whose life’s work has left an indelible, positive impact on society. He expressed confidence that the institution would now serve as a permanent beacon, inspiring future generations to uphold the core values the Sheikh embodied: knowledge, service, and integrity.
The late Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, who passed away recently at the age of 102, was one of Nigeria’s most respected Islamic scholars and a global spiritual figure within the Tijanniyya Sufi order. With millions of followers across Nigeria and beyond, his influence spanned decades, focusing on religious scholarship, moral guidance, philanthropy, and community development.
The renaming of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare—a specialist institution focused on producing healthcare professionals—to Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi University marks a significant gesture, linking the cleric’s legacy of nurturing minds with formal academic pursuit.
