President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to the welfare, professionalism, and operational effectiveness of the armed forces, describing their sacrifice as the bedrock of Nigeria’s peace, unity, and democracy.
Mr Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this on Tuesday in Abuja at the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day Gala and Award Night.
The president paid tribute to fallen heroes and serving personnel across generations, stating that remembrance was not merely ceremonial but a “lasting national duty” owed to those who laid down their lives in defence of the nation.
The president commended the armed forces and other security agencies for recent operational successes, noting that many communities once gripped by fear were now enjoying improved safety.
He said sustained pressure on terrorist and criminal networks, coupled with enhanced coordination with regional and global partners, was yielding measurable results in restoring security and public confidence.
Mr Tinubu acknowledged the sacrifices of military families, describing them as an essential pillar of national defence.
He thanked spouses, children, and loved ones of service personnel for their resilience, patience, and support, stressing that their contribution would always be recognised by the nation.
The president also announced the approval of two nationwide public engagement initiatives to mark the 26th Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.
There are the Thank-A-Soldier Electronic Wall, a digital platform for citizens to post appreciation messages to troops and veterans, and the My Nigerian Hero Campaign, a year-long social media initiative to honour serving and retired personnel.
Mr Tinubu said security remained the foremost priority of his administration, assuring armed forces that their welfare was inseparable from national security.
He pledged continued investment in equipment, training, and improved living conditions, while charging the troops to remain loyal to the constitution and remain disciplined and united in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.
“We will not rest until every Nigerian can live and work in safety and dignity,” the president said, assuring the armed forces of his full support and that of a grateful nation.
Earlier, the Minister of Defence, retired Gen. Christopher Musa, described the sacrifices of military personnel as the foundation of Nigeria’s freedom and sovereignty.
Mr Musa noted that their courage and resilience remained central to national security and stability.
He said the awards presented during the gala went beyond individual achievements, as each honour represented stories of courage, quiet sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to duty, many of which were carried out away from public attention.
He said such acts collectively formed the bedrock of the nation’s security architecture.
The minister paid special tribute to the families of fallen heroes, particularly spouses, for bearing the silent burden of sacrifice, and assured them that the legacy of their loved ones would remain an enduring part of Nigeria’s history.
The event featured award categories for deserving serving and retired officers of the armed forces.
Among the awardees are the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu; former Army Chief, retired Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai; and former Army spokesperson, retired Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman.
