President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially handed over the leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio during the 67th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Abuja.
In his farewell address, President Tinubu described his tenure as a “profound honor and privilege”, expressing gratitude for the trust and support he received from member states.
“It has been a profound honor and privilege to lead this esteemed body, and I remain deeply humbled by the trust and support you have extended to me throughout my tenure,”Tinubu stated.
“I now hand over the mantle of leadership to my great friend and dear brother, His Excellency, President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, the new Chairman of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.”
Tinubu added that he was stepping down with “a deep sense of fulfilment and optimism for the future of West Africa.”
President Bio, who now assumes the leadership of the 15-member regional bloc, faces critical challenges, including political instability in the Sahel, security threats, and economic integration efforts. His appointment comes at a time when ECOWAS is working to strengthen democracy and combat terrorism in the region.
