The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of one of its personnel, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, who allegedly killed his wife before taking his own life at Wawa Cantonment, located in Niger State.
According to a statement issued by the 22 Armoured Brigade, the tragic incident occurred on Saturday, October 11, 2025, leaving residents of the barracks in shock and confusion. The couple was reportedly found dead in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters within the cantonment.
Preliminary findings revealed that Lance Corporal Femi, who was serving at 221 Battalion, was on official duty within the cantonment before he sought permission from his superior officers to briefly attend to personal matters. Shortly after, both he and his wife were discovered lifeless in their residence.
The Nigerian Army said the remains of the couple have been preserved as investigations continue to uncover the motive and circumstances behind the murder-suicide.
In a statement signed by Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, the Army expressed deep regret over the incident and extended its condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.
“The Nigerian Army deeply regrets this, while it commiserates with the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased over the painful loss. The army also prays for the peaceful repose of their souls,” the statement read.
Brigadier General Barkins assured the public that the matter would be thoroughly investigated, and the outcome made public. He also emphasized that necessary measures would be implemented to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
“The circumstances that led to the sad incident will be thoroughly investigated, and the outcome relayed to the general public accordingly,” he added.
The Nigerian Army called for calm and understanding from the public, reaffirming its commitment to transparency and welfare of personnel within its formations.
