Controversial Nigerian singer Habeed Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has been remanded in custody after being arraigned on a nine-count criminal charge at the Federal High Court in Ota, Ogun State, on Monday.
The charges, confirmed by the Ogun State Police Command, include assault, theft of a high-value vehicle, causing harm, and resisting arrest. His remand follows the court’s denial of bail, with the presiding judge citing the absence of the police officer he allegedly assaulted as a key reason for the decision.
The prosecution outlined a series of incidents leading to the charges. Central to the case is an alleged assault on New Year’s Day at the singer’s bar in the Iyana Ilogbo area. Portable is accused of attacking his estranged partner, Ashabi Simple, alongside several police officers and other individuals.
In a separate charge, he was accused of stealing a Mercedes-Benz E300, valued at ₦12 million and belonging to an individual named Ileyemi Damilola.
A significant charge that influenced the court’s ruling involves the alleged obstruction and assault of a female police inspector, Ogungbe Olayemi, while she was performing her official duties.
Court Proceedings and Bail Denial
During the arraignment, two siblings of Ashabi Simple testified as witnesses to the alleged assault, though Ashabi herself was not present.
When Portable’s counsel applied for bail, the presiding judge declined. The judge insisted on seeing the allegedly assaulted police officer, Inspector Ogungbe Olayemi, in court before making a ruling on the bail application. This condition was not met, leading to the order for Portable’s remand.
Portable has been remanded in a correctional facility pending a fresh bail consideration, which has been scheduled for Friday, January 19.
The singer’s legal troubles became public on Sunday when a viral video showed him in police custody, an arrest reportedly connected to a complaint filed by Ashabi Simple.
