OPINION BY EMAMEH GABRIEL
President Bola Tinubu’s warm birthday message to Vice President Kashim Shettima was a significant political gesture. It was a powerful and much needed statement. For anyone who has been following the whispers in political circles and on social media, it felt like a direct response. The rumours of a rift between the two leaders, of the President looking for a new deputy for the next election, have been put to bed. This not coming as a stiff denial from a press aide, but by the President himself in a heartfelt and very public way. And it strongly suggests that this partnership is not just good to go, it is the solid foundation this government needs.
For a while now, there has been a low hum of speculation. In Nigeria, it is almost a national pastime to predict cracks in the top political relationships. People wondered if the President and his Vice were truly aligned. Some even suggested that the Vice President’s role was being reduced, or that plans were already being made for a different ticket in 2027. This kind of gossip is distracting. It takes attention away from the work of government and creates uncertainty. President Tinubu’s message has, quite brilliantly, cut through all that noise.
Look at the language he used. He did not just call him “Vice President Shettima.” He called him “my brother, partner, and Vice President.” The word “partner” is key here. It signals equality and respect. It tells the nation that the Vice President is not just a placeholder; he is an integral part of the decision-making process. Then came the clincher: “You have justified that choice.” This is the highest praise a leader can give. It is a full-throated endorsement. It tells the country and the party that Tinubu has zero regrets about his choice and, in fact, feels vindicated by it. You do not say this about someone you are planning to replace.
This makes perfect sense when you consider the immense challenges facing Nigeria. From economic reforms to security issues, the task ahead is enormous. No single person can possibly shoulder it all. A government needs a united team at the top to have any chance of success. A President and Vice President who are not in sync would create chaos and slow down progress. The work is simply too hard to be dealing with internal squabbles. Tinubu, a seasoned political strategist, understands this better than anyone. His message confirms that he values a stable, trusting partnership above all else. He needs a deputy he can rely on, and he has clearly stated that he has found that in Shettima.
Furthermore, the President specifically praised Shettima’s work on their shared ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’. He highlighted important national and international work, from securing global partnerships to driving food security reforms. By doing this, he wasn’t just giving Shettima a compliment; he was publicly crediting him for their joint successes. This shows a confident leader who is not threatened by sharing the spotlight. It proves that their partnership is yielding results that the President is proud to attach his name to.
The personal touch in the message is perhaps the most convincing part. Tinubu spoke of a relationship that “transcends official duties” and acts as a “bridge across regions and traditions.” This is profound. In a country often divided by regional and religious lines, a strong, respectful bond between a President from the south-west and a Vice President from the north-east is not just good politics; it is a powerful symbol of national unity. It shows the country that collaboration is possible and that national interest can come first. This sets a powerful example for everyone else.
Of course, there will be those who say, “It’s just words.” But in politics, words—especially those coming directly from the President—carry immense weight. This was a carefully considered public declaration. It sends a clear message to the party, the opposition, and the Nigerian people: this team is united. To change the Vice President now would be to publicly contradict this heartfelt endorsement and create a huge crisis of credibility for the President. It is simply not going to happen.
The road ahead for Nigeria is long and difficult. The government will need to make tough decisions that will not always be popular. Having a solid, unified leadership team is not a luxury; it is an absolute necessity. The birthday message has given us a rare glimpse into that relationship, and it appears to be built on a foundation of mutual respect, shared vision, and genuine partnership.
The speculations about a rift were always more about gossip than reality. President Tinubu has now drawn a line under them. He has given his Vice President his full and public backing. For the sake of the country’s stability and progress, we should take him at his word. The Tinubu-Shettima duo is not just good to go; they are already in motion, and they are in it together for the long haul. And that is ultimately good news for everyone who wants to see a stable and prosperous Nigeria.
